ABB’s Virtual Field Service: Remote Support Starts With Reliable Asset Identity

Remote technical assistance can help interpret a field problem, but exact equipment identity and approved records still govern spare-part decisions.

ABB’s Virtual Field Service: Remote Support Starts With Reliable Asset Identity

A remote expert can help a field technician interpret what is happening at an asset, but the video call is only as useful as the identity and context attached to what the camera shows. A cabinet, drive or instrument may look familiar while belonging to a different series, configuration or revision. Remote assistance can shorten the conversation; it does not, by itself, prove that a proposed spare is an interchangeable replacement.

Recent industry context: In a 21 September 2026 press release about ROG.e 2026, ABB described its Virtual Field Service as assisted-reality remote support connecting ABB specialists and field technicians in real time. The announcement placed that service among a wider oil-and-gas portfolio spanning automation, measurement, electrification, motion, and marine and ports. This is a summary of ABB’s event announcement, not a claim that the service is available at every site or that NANKMOS provides ABB support.

The camera view is not the asset record

Video can show a technician where to look, help clarify a display or label, and give a remote specialist useful visual context. But glare, dirt, small print, a partially hidden label, or a cabinet containing several similar devices can make a visual guess unreliable. The equipment record remains the reference point: site tag, manufacturer, full model and part number, serial number where relevant, installed location, and the drawing or bill-of-material reference that identifies the item.

For a maintenance discussion, the most useful evidence is usually a small, consistent set rather than a long unstructured video: the asset tag and nameplate, the exact alarm or event text, the affected channel or slot if applicable, the observed symptom and time, and the relevant document revision. Share only what site policy allows. If a label is unreadable or access is unsafe, record that limitation instead of removing guards or reaching into equipment to obtain a better view.

Keep support, diagnosis and replacement decisions distinct

Remote assistance is a communication channel, not an authorization to change a live system. A qualified plant representative should control access, approve any connection, and determine what information may leave the site. Credentials, network diagrams, security settings, and sensitive process details should not be exposed casually on a call. Any proposed test, parameter change, logic edit, or bypass must follow the site’s change-control and safety process.

Likewise, a diagnosis is not a compatibility check. Before sourcing a candidate spare, compare the complete identifier against the installed configuration and approved engineering records. Depending on the equipment, firmware, hardware revision, application, and associated components can matter. If the remote session narrows the likely fault but does not resolve the exact part identity, keep those as separate open questions in the maintenance record.

Turn a remote session into a useful handoff

After the call, record what was observed, which facts were confirmed locally, what remains uncertain, and who owns the next action. Attach authorized images and reference the applicable drawing, alarm log, or work order. This prevents a verbal observation—“it looks like the same module”—from becoming an undocumented replacement decision.

For an industrial automation spare enquiry, our product catalogue and brand directory can help locate the relevant category. Include the exact part number and application context when you contact NANKMOS; availability and suitability must be confirmed for the specific request.
